Nr. 841: Praefectura de Cirili
“Praefectura de Cirîlî, vel Seregippe del Rey cum Itâpuáma”. Map orientated to the West with the river Sao Francisco as the northern border. Engraved map after Georg Marcgraf by Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam c. 1670. Verso no text. 41,5 x 53,5 cm.
K.-van der Krogt, map 9850/1:2D. Probably from the German edition of Joan Blaeu’s “Atlas Maior”, c. 1670. Besides the new topographical details on the basis of the Dutch survey of 1638-43 this map is particularily interesting because it shows part of the indigenous fauna and flora. In the centre of our map there are depictions of a jaguar, a capybara and a tapir. The festoon near the upper border shows all kind of native exotic fruit. – Fine even impression. Full margin around platemark. Minor restoration to lower part of centrefold only. A small engraved label of an English aristocratic library pasted on back (which gives ground for the presumption, that our map was issued separately).
