Nr. 698: L’Amerique Meridionale
“L’Amerique Meridionale Divisée en ses Principales Parties”; with a separate running title in Latin at top “America Meridionalis in Suas Praecipuas Partes Accuratè divisa, ad Usum Serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis”. Double-page map in striking original colour after Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, engraved in copper by Pieter Mortier and issued by Reinier & Josua Ottens, Amsterdam at around 1729 or later. (PM) 48,5 x 60,5 cm.
Originally issued in Jaillot’s Atlas Royal around 1694, which was dedicated to the son of Louis XIV., Louis Duke of Burgundy “Le Grand Dauphin”. This atlas was not produced in Paris, but in cooperation with and by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam. Sometime after Pieter Mortier’s death the plates were sold to the Ottens family. The brothers Reinier and Josua reissued our map with their own imprint added, some copies - as ours - finely coloured in the early 18th century Dutch style! - A perfect copy in bright original colour with wide margins. Top condition.
