Nr. 716: Presburg
„Presburg“. Panoramic view from the river Danube. Below the panorama key to the most prominent buildings of the city. Printed from 2 engraved copper plates on 2 sheets joined after a drawing by Friedrich Bernhard Werner, which he made on the spot when visiting Bratislava (probably in 1732). Published by Johann Friedrich Probst, Augsburg c. 1740/45. Sheet’s size: 42 x 112, impression: 36,2 x 103 cm.
Cf. Nebehay-Wagner 514, 18, who list only 2 states of the panorama, but not the state of our example. Our copy is an intermediate state between their states 1 and 2; on our copy by the oldest son of Johann Balth. Probst the date 1732 is erased. – Fine strong and even impression on strong laid paper with 2 large watermarks. Wide original margin all around. 2 vertical folds and few creases taken out. A vertical tear in the left outer margin – far outside the impression – closed. A short trace of printer’s ink at top above title. In all a copy of outstanding quality.
