Nr. 653: Les Confins des Christiens..

Rare state of a single printed map
Beschreibung:

Engraved map with an inset “Transilvanie” in original outline colour by Pierre Duval, now published by Nicolas Langlois, Paris 1663. Verso no text. (PM) 51 x 38,3 cm.

Not in Pastoureau. Obviously our map was never published by Duval himself, but engraved by him and then provided to Jacques Lagniet (or Lagnet). Nicolas Langlois must have acquired the plate from Lagniet in 1663 or later. Both, Lagniet and Langlois, published only separate maps, no atlases. For the 2 publications of the map by Lagniet see Szántai, Duval 1, and (for his 1663 edition) Lucic, Cartogr. of the Republic of Dubrovnik) fig. 5. In the edition of 1663 Lagniet added Novi Zrin to the plate. – A very good impression of the whole plate with wide margins. Centrefold smoothened. – We have not been able to trace another copy of this probably 3rd state of the map so far. It must be rare!
