Nr. 957: L’Europe

Uncommon Duval map
Beschreibung:

“L’Europe Par P. Duval.. A Paris Chez .. J. Besson sur le Quai de l’Horloge du Palais a la Couronne d’Or, avec Privilege du Roy..1686”. The continent of Europe including Iceland. Engraved map with original outline colour by Pierre Duval, engraved by H. van Loon and published by J. Besson, Paris “1686”. (PM) 40,8 x 52 cm.

The decorative cartouche does contain the title, but it is in the first place a frame for the dedication of the map to “Monseigneur le Dauphin”. It is embellished by two dolphins and crowned at top with the coat of arms of the Dauphin, at that time the old Dauphin, the son of Louis XIV. The map seems to be a separate publication which without reasonable doubt has been published after the death of Pierre Duval in the fall of 1683 for the first time. And we assume that the engraving was executed too after 1683, when the publisher J. Besson engaged the engraver Hendrik van Loon to prepare the plate. By doing so Besson might have acted in cooperation with Mlle. Duval, one of Duval’s daughters, whose address – according to M. Pastoureau, p. 137 – was too Quai de l’Horloge..“à la Couronne d’or” in the years 1687/88. The publication of the map in cooperation with Besson might have been an “interim solution” for Mlle. Duval before she received her own privilege in 1687. – Excellent impression including the uncoloured cartouche, the colour on the territories freshly preserved. Original white margin all around. A few minor stains only, and a split of ca. 7 cm in lower centrefold closed. Excellent fresh copy.
