Nr. 1169: Africae nova Tabula

J. Hondius’ map with 4 figured borders

“Africae nova Tabula Auct. Jud. Hondio”. The continent of Africa framed by 4 decorative borders. Engraved map in full original colour by Jodocus Hondius, published by Joannes Janssonius, Amsterdam “1623”. Verso blank. (PM) 45,8 x 56,7 cm.

Schilder, MCN, vol 6, map 13; 2nd state of 5. Our 2nd state was published in the same year as the 1st state; the only difference to the 1st state is that the publisher's address of Jodocus Hondius is replaced by the one of Joannes Janssonius. From the 4th state onward the bottom border was cut off. - On both sides the map is framed by costumed African figures, the top and bottom borders each contain 6 African town views or plans in oval shape; we refer to the detailed description by Schilder, o.c. - Full impression of the plate, at top cut to or slightly inside platemark. The original colour absolutely untouched by a later hand. Margins a bit dustsoiled and with mended small imperfections. A very rare item in very good condition.
