Nr. 712: Exactissima Asiae Delineatio
“Exactissima Asiae Delineatio in Praecipuas Regiones Ceterasq. Partes divisa, et denuo in lucem edita Per Fredericum de Witt. Amstelaedami..ex Officina R. & I. Ottens”. The continent of Asia with a northern portion of Australia “Hollandia Nova”. The map is embellished by a vivacious scene of native Asian figures and a camel, parrots and a monkey as part of the title cartouche. Engraved double-page map in brilliant original colour, issued by Reinier & Josua Ottens, Amsterdam c. 1727 or later. (PM) 50,5 x 59 cm.
The map is most probably not a later state of de Wit’s map of Asia , but a close copy of this map printed from a new plate. It is almost certain, that the Ottens brothers had never acquired any of the original de Wit copperplates. They added the name of Frederick de Wit not so much because of scientific accuracy, but as an advert. – In any case: The map is rare, and our copy is a perfect example of this rare item. Its bright original colour, wide margins and freshness makes it a splendid copy in every respect.
