Nr. 1037: Carte.. de la Chine

1st state of d’Anville’s map of China

“Carte generale de la Chine dressée sur les Cartes particulieres que l’Empereur Cang-Hi a fait lever sur les lieux par les RR. PP. Jesuites Mission(n)aires dans cet Empire. Par le Sr. d’Anville Geographe du Roi. Mars MDCCXXX”. Copperplate map with original outline colour, engraved by Jean-Baptiste Delahaye, Paris 1730 or later. Verso no text. (PM) 37,4 x 52,2 cm.

Initially scheduled to accompany du Halde’s “Description.. de la Chine et de la Tartarie chinoise”, Paris 1735 (see the sign. in the upper left margin “Tome. 1, apres la Preface”) it was never included in the book, but sold separately. The map as a whole was backed by linen (not cut into sections to be used as a folding map - as it happened often in the 18th century ) and a dealer’s business plate was pasted on the back which reads “Auguste Logerot. Quai des Grands-Augustins, 55, à Paris. Géographie Élémentaire et Commerciale”. Not having been taken out from the book our map has only a single horizontal fold. – Fine equal impression. Cut outside the platemark with a small white margin. Trifle staining from glue. Few unobtrusive marginal imperfections.
