Nr. 711: Recentissima Americae Tabula
“Recentissima Novi Orbis sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula per Fred. de Witt Amst: ex officina R. & I. Ottens”. The whole continent with a “Terra Esonis” in the North-East and with the greater part of the Pacific; California is still depicted as an island. The map is embellished by a vivacious scene of Indians and other native figures around the title cartouche. Engraved double-page map in brilliant original colour, issued by Reinier & Josua Ottens, Amsterdam c. 1727 or later. (PM) 50 x 58,5 cm.
Burden # 725. Cf. also Mc Laughlin & Mayo (1995) no. 178. State 3 of Justus Danckerts map of c. 1696. The name of Frederick de Wit was added by the Ottens brothers as a mere advert, the authorship of de Wit therefore is falsely claimed on the map. There are severe doubts whether the Ottens brothers ever had acquired any of the original de Wit plates at all. – Anyway, the map is rare, and our copy is a perfect example of this rare map. Bright original colour. Wide margins. Splendid in every respect.
